Health insurance is a vital part of your time as a student at CMU-Silicon Valley. Every enrolled student must have health insurance coverage that meets university standards.
Because healthcare can sometimes feel complicated, we want to make sure you have a clear overview of what is expected, what your choices are, and where you can find help if you need it.
What you need to know
- What is health insurance?
Health insurance helps cover the cost of medical care so you don’t have to pay everything yourself. It allows you to see a doctor, get treatment, or fill prescriptions without facing large bills. - All students must have health insurance.
Carnegie Mellon requires all full-time students to carry health insurance that meets university standards. This protects your health and helps safeguard the campus community. Certain programs also require this of their part-time students. Learn more about student insurance requirements. - You will need to take action every year.
Each academic year, you must either enroll in the CMU Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or apply for a waiver if you have your own coverage that meets the requirements.- Important: If you do not complete the requirement to enroll in or waive the CMU SHIP during your open enrollment period, you will be auto-enrolled in the medical SHIP after Open Enrollment ends. Auto-enrollments are not recommended, and beginning in Fall 2025, they will incur a $50 processing fee. Learn more about open enrollment.
- The CMU Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is available to you.
SHIP is provided through Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. It offers comprehensive coverage, and it works seamlessly with One Medical services. Learn more about SHIP.
